David P. McCaffrey is a lifelong Somers resident and retired U.S. Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8) who served more than twenty years in the Navy’s Intelligence Community. His career included global assignments during the Panama conflict, the Persian Gulf War, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm, contributing to some of the nation’s most critical missions.
David has been widely recognized for his service and community leadership, including Somers Citizen of the Year, VA Veteran of the Day, Somers Hometown Hero, and selection to the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame. He has also earned lifesaving awards, fire service honors, and distinctions from veteran and civic organizations.
David serves as the Elections Director and Registrar of Voters for Somers (20 years) and is the Director of the Somers Department of Veterans Affairs, where he has spent the past decade supporting veterans and families. He is an accredited VA Veterans Service Officer and Municipal Veterans Representative, dedicating 50–70 hours each week to assisting veterans with claims, benefits, medical appointments, mental-health support, and in-home visits. He has also served more than 43 years with the Somers Fire Department as a firefighter, EMT, Fire Police officer, and committee member.
His commitment to Somers is reflected in his numerous roles as Elections Director/Registrar of Voters, key positions on many Somers Town Committees and with the initiatives he has led or supported, including Wreaths Across America, cemetery restoration projects, emergency response operations, protective-equipment distribution during the pandemic, the Veterans History Project, food and winter-clothing drives, and the Somers Flags on Main Street Program. David has held multiple leadership roles within the American Legion, including founder and Post 101 Commander, District Commander, Vice Commander, Adjutant, and Department Public Relations Coordinator.
David has devoted his life to helping others, strengthening community programs, and honoring those who served.
